| My whole way of working is built on an extensive knowledge of the technical aspects of goldsmithing, through which I express a contemporary aesthetic. The skill in the making undoubtedly contributes to the overall effect of the finished piece, in a sensual way, however I intend my craft to remain very much at the service of my art. I am preoccupied with the surfaces of precious metals and with form – juxtaposing the play of light, reflection, lustre with characteristic expressions of angle, curve and line. I am intrigued, too, by the potential for dialogue between inner and outer planes, with random patterns held in tension within strictly delineated edges, and the visual dynamic created by the contrast and harmony of all these factors. Technically I have been trying to extend the possibilities of fusion between gold and platinum, employing platinum gauze, mesh, distressed fragments, tesserae, wire and gold dust to create a variety of surfaces from which I construct my jewellery. I rarely do a drawing of a piece before I make it, preferring to create it directly in the metals so that I can keep my mind open to all kinds of possibilities and avoid fixing any detail right up to the completion of a piece.

Biography
| Jacqueline Mina was born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1942. Having graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1965 she was a visiting lecturer there for twenty-two years, until 1994. Continually fascinated by precious metals Jacqueline has, over the years, become well-known for extending the possibilities of fusion between gold and platinum and for using traditional goldsmithing techniques in unorthodox ways.
She is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, a Trustee of Bishopsland Educational Trust, and was a founding member of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery. Occasionally holding solo shows – for example, at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1985, Lesley Craze Gallery and the Scottish Gallery in 2002, Jacqueline is frequently invited to participate in international exhibitions such as Schmuck 2000 in Munich, Collect 2004 - 2008 at the V&A in London and Collect 2009 at the new Saatchi Gallery in London. In 2004 Jacqueline curated “orgold” an exhibition of contemporary jewellery which toured the UK. She is currently preparing for a major retrospective of her work to be held at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 2011. The recipient of many prizes and commissions, her greatest accolade was to be judged the winner of the Jerwood Prize for Applied Art 2000. Major public collections hold important examples of her art, amongst which are the V&A Museum, the Crafts Council and the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London; National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh; Cleveland Collection of Contemporary Jewellery at MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art), and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design, New York. |
