Stretching the boundaries of what can be achieved with enamel as a medium, I have developed my own unique method of sifting and fusing it on a movable base. My work comprises mainly brooches and necklaces made out of silver and gold chain alone, or chain attached onto a copper mesh base which are then enamelled. Even though I have endless sources of inspiration, looking into Ancient Greek and Cypriot Jewellery had a tremendous influence on my work.The appeal to me is that each piece is unique. My designs cannot be pre-conceived; each piece is allowed to create itself.

▪2010 Αλυσοδεμένο- Alysodeméno : 'Chained'.

Αλυσοδεμένο-Alysodeméno meaning ‘Chained’ is my first solo jewellery exhibition.
'The title ‘Alysodeméno’ is used here not only in a literal sense, since my work involves enamel which is ‘chain bound’ but more meaningfully, metaphorically; as the future is inexorably linked to the past and the traditional is tied to the contemporary, so is the strong undivided link between what represents me as a person and my Greek-Cypriot heritage which is expressed through my art'.
Preview on Thursday 11 November, 6pm-8pm.
Opening hours: Friday and Monday, 11am-7pm;
Saturday and Sunday, 1pm-7pm.
Supported by the Hellenic Centre.

Biography

I was born in Cyprus but have been living in London since 1980. After a long career as a freelance Interior Designer, I decided to pursue a new challenge in my life by going back to full time education to study Jewellery Design. Graduating in June 2007 with First Class Honours from Middlesex University, with Caroline Broadhead as Head of Department, I now work from my workshop in North London.

The course at Middlesex was very conceptual, with main emphasis on creativity and having an open mind when choosing materials and processes. I was introduced to enamelling in my second year by Ros Conway and following a three day workshop with Bettina Dittlmann, I continued experimenting with fusing enamel on copper mesh. I experimented with distortion which involved stretching and manipulating the copper mesh; I also experimented with transparency which meant finding ways of applying the enamel really thinly. Subsequently, I discovered a way of producing very fine sheets of enamel, which I refer to in my work as ‘leaves’.

Ever since I started experimenting with enamels on copper mesh, I was always intrigued in finding challenging ways of applying and fusing enamel on a base that was ‘moveable’.
My work comprises mainly of brooches and necklaces made out of various types of silver and gold chain alone, or chain attached onto a copper mesh base which are then enamelled.

I have taken part in numerous exhibitions in London and abroad. My work is represented in the States by Charon Kransen Arts New York and Alternatives Gallery in Rome.
