Sarah L Hamilton

I design and create jewellery in my studio in Surrey. I use 100% recycled sterling silver with flashes of coloured shimmering resin. The pieces are striking geometric shapes, designed to be elegant and easy to wear. Due to the techniques used, each piece is original and unique.

Sarah L Hamilton jewellery was created in September 2022. Having always loved colour, simplicity and clarity, I began designing geometric, sterling silver shapes filled with shimmering, coloured resin. I wanted the freedom to design and make pieces that were well made, elegant, striking and easy to wear.
I first began making jewellery whilst at school. Friends and teachers ordered from my hand drawn catalogue!
Following a Foundation Course at The Central School of Art and Design, I studied at Middlesex Polytechnic and graduated in 1987. Although specialising in jewellery, I integrated textile elements, particularly knitting, into my work. As part of the course I was lucky to work for the jeweller Alison Baxter and the textile company Artworks. These experiences influenced my final work of handknitted garments joined and adorned in coloured perspex.
Indeed I am using the skills and the tools I gained from Middlesex Polytechnic where I studied in the 1980s. Using resin was new to me but I learned techniques through trial and error and through social media.
Indeed, the world is a very different place now. There was no world wide web when I was training but I have learned to embrace social media and have enjoyed the liberation of creating a 'reel' sharing my processes and work with the world.
In October 2022 I was awarded a small, business grant from Reigate and Banstead Council which I used to buy more workshop equipment and in November sold my first pieces at an arts centre in Havant.
Having now ceased my work as a primary school teacher, I am embarking on more fairs and enjoying the liberation of creating new pieces and discussing my techniques with customers.
